Ruthie Bolton

In 1997, eight new teams formed the WNBA. Each team was assigned one proven champion in women’s basketball to serve as a foundation upon which the legacy of each new team would be built.

The legacy of the Sacramento Monarchs was built on one such champion…2-Time Olympic Gold Medalist and WNBA all-star “Mighty Ruthie” Bolton.

Ruthie Bolton has scored over 2000 career points. She is 4th on the WNBA’s all-time 3-pointer list, and she is the only player in the history of the Monarchs to have her number retired in Sacramento’s Arco Arena.

She’s been on the cover of Sports Illustrated, she’s been a guest for Regis Philbin and David Letterman, and, yes, she’s even done a Nike commercial.

Despite these phenomenal achievements, Ruthie believes that her gifts are to be used for a higher purpose: to inspire others to let their light shine and perform at their best.

“If I am only remembered for being a basketball player, I believe that I have failed in my job on this planet,” says Bolton, who makes a daily practice of encouraging others in her life, and in her message to the world.

The four most motivating words to Ruthie Bolton are “I can’t do it”. Every time she has been told this, she has responded by catapulting forward to a new level of success. In college, she was told she would not even play, but, by her senior year, she brought her team to 2 “Final Four” games. After college, she was not even invited to try out for the U.S. National Team- a team which she later brought to a gold medal in 1996. After being told she would never play basketball again due to a torn ACL, she made the National Team again, and brought them to a second Gold Medal.

Perhaps Ruthie’s most gratifying accomplishment is hearing that her example has inspired so many young women to continue pursuing their own dream of being a collegiate or professional basketball player.

At a time when excuses for not even trying are so easy to come by, here is a 5’7” African-American female who is considered by many to be the giant in her line of work; a truly feminine woman, who does not hesitate at the opportunity for a little “friendly competition” with anyone, any time, regardless of their size…or gender; an inspiration who has a message of hope for anyone struggling with limitations.

Ruthie Bolton is passionate about kids. She offers substantially discounted rates to businesses willing to sponsor appearances at schools and non-profit events. She is also a very effective keynote speaker, and a great draw for grand openings. Recent appearances have included PRIDE Industries’ National Conference, The Professional Business Women's Conference, Total Health Expo, Character Combine, several community special events, and multiple school assemblies.
